What happens when a dormant talent is awakened by a simple dare? Poet Awil takes us on her journey of rediscovery after five years away from writing poetry, sharing the pivotal moment when her sister challenged her to perform at Words Over Latte as a birthday gift.

The conversation reveals Awil's unique approach to creating and performing poetry. She discusses her preference for pairing poems with musical tracks, creating multisensory experiences that allow audiences to connect on multiple levels. With refreshing honesty, she admits to pre-performance nerves—"shaking in my boots"—while emphasizing her hope that audiences will "respect the mic" and find connections within her words.

For fellow creators struggling with creative blocks, Awil offers practical wisdom from her own experience. Rather than forcing complete works, she captures poetic fragments as they come to her, often while listening to music, later weaving these pieces into cohesive poems. This patient, intuitive approach has helped revitalize her creative practice and might inspire others facing similar challenges.

The highlight of our conversation arrives when Awil shares an exclusive performance of her new poem "You Only Reap What You Sow," exploring themes of love, reciprocity, and personal growth. Her powerful lines—"I've healed. I'm better now, teaching others to love me better"—demonstrate the emotional depth and authenticity that define her work. Don't miss her upcoming performances at Josh Lounge on July 10th with Ari the Vibe and at Lake Street on July the 17th. Follow her journey on social media and experience firsthand the power of poetry paired with music.

WEBVTT

00:00:00.682 --> 00:00:05.112
So it probably was like maybe five years since I wrote a poem before I kind of hopped back into it again.

00:00:05.112 --> 00:00:10.102
But this is the first time I've ever like performed my poetry for anyone else or even shared it.

00:00:10.102 --> 00:00:13.625
Really Just take it, tell me oh.

00:00:47.790 --> 00:00:49.932
Just take it, tell me.

00:00:49.932 --> 00:00:56.823
Oh, we are back at Wine Down Wednesday and we have Miss Awil hey, welcome in.

00:00:57.420 --> 00:00:58.625
Thank you for having me.

00:00:58.899 --> 00:01:01.426
No, it's an honor to have you here in our chair.

00:01:01.426 --> 00:01:02.511
It is.

00:01:02.511 --> 00:01:07.870
I'm excited to be here, so go ahead and tell us a little bit about yourself.

00:01:09.560 --> 00:01:09.981
I will.

00:01:09.981 --> 00:01:26.334
Hopefully you'll be seeing me soon around different places, even if it's just like sharing or cause I love live music so I usually be everywhere that live music is and I'm a poet, so, or a poetess, so you'll see me on different shows coming up.

00:01:26.334 --> 00:01:45.388
To actually have a show coming up on July 10th, um, where I'll be performing with Josh, with some other people at um, ari's uh band camp, ari the vibe, if y'all know I'm sure everybody knows who that is but I'll be performing um with her on July the 10th.

00:01:45.388 --> 00:01:46.941
So y'all come out to Josh Lounge.

00:01:46.941 --> 00:01:52.533
And then I also am going to be at Lake Street on July 17th and another poetry show.

00:01:52.533 --> 00:01:55.024
So y'all come see me perform.

00:01:55.084 --> 00:02:03.125
But yeah, please come out and see, a Will perform but I just kind of started back with poetry.

00:02:03.585 --> 00:02:08.585
um, last year on June 10th, my sister kind of dared me.

00:02:08.585 --> 00:02:12.293
We read Words Over Latte, which we always did Words Over Latte anyway.

00:02:12.293 --> 00:02:13.580
But she dared me.

00:02:13.580 --> 00:02:17.442
She was like you know, you ain't got to give me nothing for my birthday, just go up there and like do a poem.

00:02:17.442 --> 00:02:24.506
Because I told her that I had just started back kind of writing, and she dared me and I went up there and it kind of like pushed me forward a little bit.

00:02:24.506 --> 00:02:30.121
So I've been like trying to find ways for people to see me perform my poetry and been writing ever since.

00:02:30.140 --> 00:02:31.895
so I heard that.

00:02:31.895 --> 00:02:35.896
I heard that, so I know you're performing tonight.

00:02:35.896 --> 00:02:42.759
What is one thing that you would want the audience to feel as you're doing your?

00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:44.181
poetry.

00:02:44.181 --> 00:02:50.704
I hope that you can connect with some part of it, even if it's just like you like the music that I pair my poetry with.

00:02:50.704 --> 00:02:58.287
Because I do read without music but I think I prefer it more, just because I love, love music.

00:02:58.287 --> 00:03:04.569
So I usually try to pair it with some type of music track or just kind of switch my style up a little bit.

00:03:04.569 --> 00:03:13.633
So it's not always the same thing, but whether they connect with the music that I have and hopefully they connect with my words and my emotions.

00:03:19.056 --> 00:03:20.062
And you know they feel.

00:03:20.062 --> 00:03:21.468
They feel what I'm trying to convey poetry Right.

00:03:21.489 --> 00:03:21.751
I love that.

00:03:21.751 --> 00:03:21.991
That's deep.

00:03:21.991 --> 00:03:22.293
I like that.

00:03:22.293 --> 00:03:22.634
I like that.

00:03:23.475 --> 00:03:30.169
And how, like before you started back on June 10th, how long were you doing it before?

00:03:31.497 --> 00:03:36.307
I've always been like writing, just not on the scale that I am now.

00:03:36.307 --> 00:03:44.145
So I think I kind of fell off from writing and I did more like journaling than writing poetry.

00:03:44.145 --> 00:03:48.777
So it probably was like maybe five years since I wrote a poem before I kind of hopped back into it again.

00:03:48.777 --> 00:03:55.200
But this is the first time I've ever like performed my poetry for anyone else or even shared it really so that.

00:03:55.200 --> 00:03:57.786
So that was kind of like the start of it back in June.

00:03:57.786 --> 00:04:00.777
Okay, are there any?

00:04:00.919 --> 00:04:10.163
fears that you have before going on oh, I'm always nervous, like I know a lot of people will be like, oh no, you never say nervous, I be scared, like shaking in my boots.

00:04:10.163 --> 00:04:19.038
But like I just hope that everybody can connect with it and that people actually like respect them, like I guess you could say, like they say it words of a lot.

00:04:19.038 --> 00:04:21.759
I just hope that everybody can connect with it and that people actually respect the mic.

00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:26.004
I guess you could say they say it words of a lot and actually give other people who may be able to connect a chance to hear me.

00:04:26.004 --> 00:04:35.372
So, just as long as they respect what I'm saying and at least try to listen, I'm good, because it might be a little bit of something in there for you that you might vibe with and want to listen to me again.

00:04:38.535 --> 00:04:40.122
That's right, awil.

00:04:40.122 --> 00:04:46.694
That's right For those that, like you said yourself, you started and then you kind of just coaxed it for a while.

00:04:46.694 --> 00:04:54.249
What would be just a tip to those that are stuck in that writer's block or that root as well?

00:04:54.249 --> 00:04:56.021
What was something that you would say to those people?

00:04:56.576 --> 00:05:05.899
I think what kind of started me back to, instead of me focusing on like, okay, I gotta sit down and write the whole thing out, like I would just take it in pieces, like as it came to me.

00:05:05.899 --> 00:05:14.499
I might be listening to music and, okay, I might have a portion of the poem here and it might be like a week before I finish and like put all the pieces together.

00:05:14.499 --> 00:05:26.242
But I just take the time to sit down and write out the pieces as they come to me and then I can kind of see how I pull them together into the poem, even if it's not the full picture at first.

00:05:26.242 --> 00:05:33.391
Like keep trying and, you know, kind of figure out what your technique is gonna be.

00:05:34.978 --> 00:05:38.805
Okay, that's some good information so how can we find you?

00:05:39.367 --> 00:05:43.060
I am on Facebook under A Will A Way to Earth.

00:05:43.060 --> 00:05:51.619
You can find me on Instagram at A Will A Way, 1985, and then on TikTok at A Will A Way, I believe also.

00:05:51.619 --> 00:05:53.221
So, yeah, y'all follow me.

00:05:55.464 --> 00:06:02.576
When you guys heard it just here at Wine Down Wednesday please follow a wheel away Before we go.

00:06:02.576 --> 00:06:06.742
We do we would like to hear just a okay, a little something you got for us.

00:06:07.774 --> 00:06:07.995
Okay.

00:06:07.995 --> 00:06:11.824
So this is actually one that a newer one, a newer poem.

00:06:11.824 --> 00:06:15.961
I just finished it and I haven't read it yet anywhere, so I'll read a portion over here.

00:06:15.961 --> 00:06:19.483
And it's called you Only Reap what you Sow.

00:06:19.483 --> 00:06:47.262
I always loved real hard, even when I was barely loved, conditioned from the first taste of love to give more than I was given, pulled into constant cycles of toxicity, thinking that it was cute, normal, that it was cool for me to continuously pour out quickly depleting, pour out my quickly depleting love stream without demanding that you pour back into me.

00:06:47.262 --> 00:06:48.836
But I've healed.

00:06:48.836 --> 00:07:21.220
I'm better now, teaching others to love me, better, now that I've already learned how, finally searching for a real love for someone who is constantly ready to show me off, show up without mention and show out for me, adding new words to my ongoing self-dialogue, like reciprocity, while working on staying open, ensuring that the ebb and flow of my love never get backed up, that it's constantly flowing.

00:07:21.220 --> 00:07:22.322
So that's a portion of it.

00:07:22.382 --> 00:07:22.961
It's pretty long.

00:07:22.961 --> 00:07:37.146
Are you performing this one tonight?

00:07:37.146 --> 00:07:40.130
No, I honor to hear one that's never been out yet y'all.

00:07:40.130 --> 00:07:44.471
And if y'all enjoyed that, imagine what else he has Right.

00:07:45.435 --> 00:07:47.620
Ms Awil, we really thank you for coming on today.

00:07:47.660 --> 00:07:49.543
Thank you for having me.

00:07:49.543 --> 00:07:50.264
Thank you so much.

00:07:50.286 --> 00:07:51.026
Yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am.

00:07:51.127 --> 00:07:53.891
All right, you guys, make sure y'all follow Awil on all of her socials.

00:07:53.891 --> 00:07:55.815
We'll leave them here on the comments.

00:07:55.815 --> 00:07:57.456
We love y'all, thank y'all.
